The unexpected movement and outcomes of the Gen Z group have ignited a new sense of hope among the Nepalese people. At a time when rising corruption, disorder and oppression by the ruling elite had left citizens frustrated, the Gen Z movement emerged as a powerful voice for the public. Yet, its success also brought uncertainty, leaving many Nepalese anxious about the country’s future.
Internal disputes within the Gen Z group, damage to public infrastructure and fears of increasing foreign interference had created widespread unease. However, three days after the movement concluded, some relief came when following extensive deliberations, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was appointed as the Prime Minister of the interim government.
Her immediate challenge is to address the demands of citizens who have grown weary of political parties and past governments, while ensuring that free and fair elections take place. With a background rooted more in the judiciary than in politics, Karki faces the daunting task of safeguarding Nepal’s Constitution, parliamentary system, federal democratic republic, and the spirit of the Gen Z movement, while also ensuring a smooth transfer of power through multiparty competition. Along with rebuilding the destroyed and burned building, it has also become their responsibility to infuse additional energy into the broken and burned hearts.
For nearly two decades, Nepal’s politics has revolved around major political parties, entangling society and influencing even the bureaucracy, which is meant to remain neutral. Confronting this entrenched system will be one of the new Prime Minister’s greatest tests.
As Nepal’s first woman Prime Minister, Karki carries an image of courage, determination, and integrity. The need of the hour is for the nation to support her in thought, word, and action. so she can lead the country toward stability, a logical conclusion to the political transition and a path of development.
